Week in Review: Dr. Seuss

We interrupted our regularly scheduled program to spend some time saying, "Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss!" We had a great week full of some really fun activities.

THE CAT IN THE HAT
Inspired by this post at Superheroes and Princesses I attempted to recreate the cat's hat with what I had on hand. Strawberries, cool whip, and graham crackers (a very diet friendly snack). lol They didn't turn out quite as cute as the link I posted, but Annabelle got what they were supposed to be right away.
She made her own hat.....and wore a dance leotard the whole day. :)
There is a part of the Cat in the Hat story where he balances a bunch of different things while on top of a ball. I thought that it would be fun to do some balancing of our own. Together we would balance the scale using different objects and then count how many it took to balance the scales. Our constant was a little rock. She absolutely loved this!

I gathered every different kind of hat in our house and we all had a good time trying them on.
Annabelle insisted on only wearing the girl hats.
Even I had a good time! This picture is courtesy of Annabelle.
THE FOOT BOOK
We started off by reading the book of course, and then completed a printout activity from 2 Teaching Mommies. So many cute Dr. Seuss activities in their unit, check it out if you have a minute. Annabell measured the objects with her feet and then colored in how many feet the object was. This is not an accurate form of measurement. lol Her steps were very inconsistent. :)
Measuring the stove.
Coloring the feet. Sorry for the bad picture. I just thought it was sweet because they were taking turns and Asa was waiting very patiently for her to finish.
When we were done measuring we had fun decorating our feet. They told me what to put on their feet and that's what I drew. Annabelle allowed Asa to draw on the bottoms of her feet, but not the top....and she wanted nothing to do with drawing on his. Annabelle did my left foot and surprised me with writing HI all by herself! Asa did my right foot.....I always wanted a big blue mark on my foot. :)
After we were done decorating our feet we read the Bible story about Jesus washing the disciples feet and talked about how important it is to be kind, helpful, and servant-hearted toward one another.
GREEN EGGS AND HAM
Annabelle thought that this was the absolute silliest book ever. She didn't understand why anyone would name someone Sam I Am...she didn't quite get that he was saying that his name was Sam.

The kids all pasted and painted some clip art images of eggs and ham. I even let Silas in on the craft action for the first time. More details on that in the next post.

I put together a green laundry basket. My intentions were more geared toward Silas, but Annabelle and Asa enjoyed it too.
Mixing up green salad
She wanted to take a picture of her creation.
HORTON HEARS A WHO
I LOVE these bead letters that I found for a great deal on Craig's List this week. They are the cutest little beads. After I read the story, discussed the importance of listening carefully, and made elephant ears we played a little game with these beads. The game idea came from the 2 Teaching Mommies link I gave above. Annabelle and Asa were both really excited because they had been eying these little guys since I brought them home.
I lined up several letters and would say the phonic sound of the letter. Than Annabelle (or Asa depending on whose turn it was) would come over and pick up the letter that made the sound and put it on their string. I was pleasantly surprised at the outcome. Annabelle only got one wrong and mixed up the letter Y with the short u sound.
MR. BROWN CAN MOO! CAN YOU?
I unfortunately didn't get any pictures playing this game, but we had fun playing it nonetheless. It is also from 2 Teaching Mommies (told you they had some great stuff)! I cut apart the cube that they had for this came and taped the pieces to our large dice that we have. The kids always love it when I pull out the large dice. The dice would land on a noise and Annabelle (or Asa) would have to identify the noise and put a mark on their chart. We played until the first noise made it until 10.
I hope everyone else had a great week. I know that their were others who did a Seuss theme this week and I'm excited to see their activities. Happy blogging!

I'm linking up to Preschool Corner. Head on over to see what other families had fun doing this week.

  1. What a fun week! I love all those ideas. We celebrated on his birthday and I meant to keep it going all week but it got too crazy. I think I am going head to 2 Teaching Mommies and do some belated birthday fun next week. :-) Thanks for sharing!

  2. My son had the same inconsistency with his foot measurements! Love how you incorporated a Bible story into your theme. We read a devotion from a book every day, but you've inspired me to work harder at using Bible stories in our themes!
